The Door
Walker Art Center, Minneapolis

Type

  • Interactive Installation

A physical "Web Portal" in the form of a self-standing revolving door, which allows museum visitors to navigate through various web sites by rotating it. Every 15 degrees a different URL is mapped to the angle of the door rotation. Entering a new site is announced by the sound of a doorbell. The intention here was to make the web experience unique to the museum environment, turning the viewer into a performer for the bystanders, thereby transforming the ubiquitous web experience into a site specific "event". It is also a commentary on the web experience, where travelling happens without distance, where arrival occurs without departure.
